The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) said Monday that flight operations at the main airport in the country's capital of Nairobi have resumed after the removal of the stalled aircraft.
The KAA said the normal operations at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) resumed after a runaway incident that occurred at around 8 a.m. local time was fixed.
"The incident involved a cargo aircraft destined for Amsterdam but forced to abort take off due to technical issues," the authority said in a statement issued Monday evening.
It said as a result of the incident, 11 out of 16 rear tires were punctured, and the process of removing the cargo plane from the runway required the evacuation of 100 tonnes of cargo and the replacement of the damaged tires before it could be towed to safety.
"The JKIA runway is now open, and operations at the airport have resumed. Disabled aircraft have been cleared from the runway," the KAA said.
The Kenyan aviation authorities regretted the incident and consequently advised passengers to contact their respective airlines for the latest information on the status of their flights.
The incident had earlier caused the diversion of a Kenya Airways flight that was destined for the JKIA to Uganda's Entebbe International Airport.
