The political secretary to the Finance Minister, Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim, yesterday made a police report against Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin on his statement of a planned prosecution against him using enforcement agencies to achieve the minister’s political ends.
Speaking to reporters after making the report at the Putrajaya district police headquarters, Kamil said the report was made after finding that Muhyiddin's statement was defamatory and could create a negative perception of the leadership of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Kamil also said that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had the right to investigate any individual in line with its status as an independent body.
Putrajaya district police chief A Asmadi Abdul Aziz, when contacted, confirmed receiving the report and said the police would conduct an investigation.
On March 10, Muhyiddin reportedly described the prosecution against him as a form of political intimidation that was planned using enforcement agencies as a tool to achieve political goals.
The former prime minister was earlier charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court with six counts related to money in Bersatu's account.
He pleaded not guilty to four charges that as the prime minister of Malaysia and president of Bersatu, he had used his position to receive bribes amounting to RM232.5 million, and two charges of receiving money from illegal activities amounting to RM195 million, as Bersatu president.
Muhyiddin was also charged yesterday with one count of receiving money from illegal activities amounting to RM5 million, to which he pleaded not guilty.
He said the prime minister had stated that the government under his leadership would not interfere in any investigation or action decided by the authorities.
