In 2020, a year of pandemic-induced economic distress, suicides among “tradesmen” increased by 50 per cent — the highest across categories — compared to 2019.
Compared to 2019, suicides among the business community in 2020 increased 29 per cent however suicides among tradespeople, increased to 4,356 in 2020 — a 49.9 per cent jump.
During the pandemic and slew of lock downs, small-businesses/traders-suffered the most, with many forced to close or default on loans.
